The NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll also found that only 13% of registered voters believe America is on the right track. (Interestingly, that’s roughly the same percentage of folks who approve of the performance of the Democrat-controlled Congress.) The poll also found that the top two issues on the minds of voters were the economy and energy prices – two intimately related issues – and they were nearly tied in importance.

Over the past several weeks, numerous polls have found overwhelming support among the American people for more domestic oil production in order to lower prices at the pump. The American people clearly understand the most fundamental concept of economics – the law of supply and demand. So what are congressional Democrats doing? Nothing!

Numerous press reports indicate that Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are refusing to allow serious debate and fair votes on more domestic oil production. The Politico reported yesterday, “Democratic leaders, caught off guard by a swing in public opinion and undermined by some of their own members, are scrambling to run down the clock on calls to lift the ban on offshore oil drilling.”

For example, Democrats cancelled a meeting of the Senate Appropriations Committee this week when it became evident that Republicans wanted to debate domestic energy production. House Democrats did the same thing last month. What are they afraid of? Could it be that liberal members of Congress do not understand basic economics or are they hiding some other agenda? I suspect it is both.

Yesterday brought even more news about the tremendous amount of oil that exists within our own borders. According to a new report by the U.S. Geological Survey, there may be as many as 90 billion barrels of oil in the Arctic, one-third of which is in Alaska. Yet, congressional Democrats refuse to allow us to tap our own resources.

Democrats have become so beholden to the radical environmentalist movement that they are, in effect, imposing their own oil embargo against the American people! Democrats are doing to America today what the Arabs did to us in the 1970s – they are withholding oil from the markets, causing supply shortages and high prices!

By the way, the rank hypocrisy of the Democrats on energy has reached new heights. You may recall that Senator John McCain proposed suspending the federal gas tax during the peak summer travel months to give American consumers a break. Democrats had no plan of their own to lower prices and scoffed at the idea, calling it a “gimmick.”

Well, guess what? It turns out that members of the Democrat National Convention’s host committee have been filling up their tanks tax free thanks to the taxpaying citizens of Denver, Colorado. Democrat Party officials were using the city’s gas pumps, which are exempt from taxes, saving these liberal party hacks 40 cents a gallon. According to one press report, the Colorado attorney general has referred the issue to the state Department of Revenue, saying it “would seem” illegal.

You can’t get a gas tax “holiday” – that’s a gimmick. But if you’re a liberal Democrat planning Barack Obama’s coronation party, well, that’s different.
