How many dependents can America afford?Submitted by kdalons on Sun, 05/11/2008 - 10:56.
From the "New Deal" on, America has had an ever increasing number of "dependents" - that is, people that take more than they give, via the federal, state, and local governments. Whether these people are actually citizens is an entirely different discussion, but the fundamental issue is whether the state we find ourselves in as a nation is sustainable or workable - that is, can our culture, economy and people (you know, "we the people") continue down this path? Liberals today continually harp on the problems of our nation always saying that more governmental intervention is the solution (we conservatives also recognize issues but propose entirely different solutions). The left's dialog is typically abstract and theoretical (ie. Barak Obama and his "change" agenda) or focused on the plight of a single individual as the pretext for their broad, socialistic ideas, but what used to be common sense is apparently not part of the process. Let's consider the big picture - the latest numbers indicate that just at the federal level, we (yes WE) are spending more on entitlements than are spent on national defense (which is no small number either). When we consider the federal budget - the number is so large it boggles the mind - and is essentially incomprehensible (even by those spending it in Congress!). The most fundamental issue is this: just like every other closed system, for every dollar obtained from the "government" by a entitlement-RECEIVING person, at least one dollar is taken from a tax-PAYING citizen (actually far more since the government is so obscenely inefficient). Sure, those receiving more than they contribute today favor the setup, but how long can this “ponzi scheme” continue before most of those on the receiving end are also enslaved? There is a reason that socialism has proven to be an unsustainable, abject failure wherever it has been tried - IT DOES NOT WORK! In fact many of the former Soviet nations are very successfully abandoning it for free-market capitalism/democracy with incredible success... Go figure. They like our Constitution and the limits it imposes; it is high time we do the same!
